Submissions with Worse Press
Worse Press is currently open to submissions, pitches, clarifying questions, and pleasant correspondence.
Chapbooks, full-lengths, comics and graphic novels, hybrid, fiction, weird stuff—I like funny. I like sad. I like it when I’m made to care about stuff I didn’t know I was going to care about. I am based in the United States and am a monolingual English speaker, so I am probably best equipped to publish English-language books in North America. I am a poet, and hence poetry was my initial idea for a press. However, I am open to other types of books! Worse Press is an experiment. If you’re interested in the concept behind the press (gifting and not selling your published books), let’s talk.
The way you get in touch with me is email. Here are the things you need to know.
1. When you email me about Worse Press, include “Worse Press” in the subject line.
2. Simultaneous submissions are fine. Attachments to your email should be PDFs or DOCXs. I don’t need a third-person bio but I would appreciate knowing a little about who you are.
3. I ask you remember that I am one person, with feelings, and that you keep any weird, rude, hateful, demanding, or judgmental stuff to an ABSOLUTE MINIMUM. Like, preferably zero. You don’t have to be formal, just be humane. My name is Catherine and you can address me by first name.
4. I promise I will do my utmost to also respect you and your time. I won’t be able to publish every cool book I want to, but I will treat you like a human being. Or at least, I will email you back.
Publishing with Worse Press
The concept is this: there will be a set budget for each title, and depending on an author’s preferences and the project’s needs, we could write a custom contract that has, just for example: a larger author stipend and a smaller print run, no author stipend and hardcover books with fancy gold foil, or an e-book release and a donation to your local animal shelter. As an author with Worse Press, you will be offered cover art that I create, and my editing and book design skills. This is not set in stone, but a baseline. Together we will decide how many copies of your book you would like to have for in-person distribution, and how many will be made available for free online. So you have a ballpark idea, a Worse book’s print run might be between 200-500 copies. There are many factors into deciding how many books to print, and as an author-collaborator, you would be part of those decisions. If this sounds plausible, get in touch.
